The Cluster of Excellence livMatS develops completely novel, bioinspired materials systems that adapt autonomously to various environments and harvest clean energy from their surroundings. The intention of these purely technical – yet in a behavioral sense quasi-living – materials systems is to meet the demands of humans with regard to pioneering environmental and energy technologies. The societal relevance of autonomous systems and their sustainability will thus play an important role in their development. The research program of livMatS is characterized by highly interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from a broad range of fields including engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, the humanities, and sustainability sciences.

Project Description:

Developing an automatic measurement system for opto-electronic characterisation of solar energy storage devices.

As part of Freiburg university’s excellence cluster livMatS, we are researching and developing monolithic materials systems for solar energy harvesting and storage (SolStore). These systems are made up of a photovoltaic cell and a supercapacitor or electrochemical cell, which are assembled into one multilayer device. While standard methods exist for characterising each of these components individually, we are in need for a dedicated setup that can be used to efficiently and reliably perform measurements on the integrated device and gather data on its physical properties. In particular, this project will encompass:

  • Hardware: Developing a chuck for holding the sample, with integrated contacts and a shutter; establishing interfaces between the chuck, the SMU, the sun simulator and the computer.
  • Software: Developing a program for performing a variety of measurement processes on the sample and collecting the data. Obvious choices for programming languages are Labview and Python; however, the candidate may choose to opt for an alternative language they are more familiar with if the same or a better implementation can be achieved.

This is a relatively new area of research in the overlap between fundamental science and technology. As such, we have an opportunity and a responsibility at this stage to develop a measurement protocol that not only allows researchers in the field to better compare data, but also gives engineers a clearer picture as to the applicability of this technology.

This work could after completion of the project further developed into a master’s thesis, should we work well together and should there be interest on both sides.

Expected candidate profile:

We are searching for a research assistant with a BA/BSc in STEM. The candidate should have enthusiasm for solving technical problems independently. Good knowledge of English or German is required, as well as some minimal programming experience. Familiarity with Labview, Python or C/C++ is favourable.

Candidates who are interested in the master’s thesis after the completion of the project should furthermore have at least a basic understanding of the underlying principles of a photovoltaic cell, a supercapacitor and an electrochemical cell. They should also have very good English skills, both written and spoken.
