The livMatS Pavilion received the Green Concept Award 2022 in the category Best of Architecture & Tiny Houses. Since 2013, the international Green Product Award has recognized products and services that excel in design, innovation and sustainability. 1500 projects from 56 countries were submitted for the award and reviewed in a multi-stage process. The Green Concept Award, presented in collaboration with the IKEA Stiftung, exclusively honors concepts for sustainable products and services, that are not yet on the market.

The jury stated: “Digitalisation and sustainability are not contradictory. The University of Stuttgart's livMats Pavillion prototype demonstrates in an innovative and at the same time aesthetic way how the great challenges of our time can be cleverly networked to create sustainable, resource-efficient alternatives to our conventional building methods. The robotically twisted flax fibres are not only renewable, biodegradable and offer an exciting alternative to known natural building materials due to their regional availability, but also generate a new material-specific design language of the highest aesthetic quality.”

Researchers from the Universities of Freiburg and Stuttgart together with master’s students from the University of Stuttgart have designed the livMatS pavilion in a joint project. With this lightweight pavilion, the team presents a model for a sustainable, resource-efficient alternative to conventional construction methods in the Botanical Garden of the University of Freiburg.
