The non-local meta-material of the pomelo peel for bio-inspired long-fiber reinforcement
The peel of the pomelo fruit (Citrus maxima) exhibits extraordinarily good properties for cushioning against impacts and converting a local deposition of energy into a global dissipation. Through mathematical investigation, I intend to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the delocalization of energy dissipation in the pomelo peel. My aim is to classify idealized (bio-)mechanical material geometry systems and obtain explicit formulae for effective properties from their microstructure. These results may be used for developing materials with custom-tuned effective properties.
