“Trained plants”: Responses of plant leaves of Pilea peperomioides to various mechanical stimuli
With a focus on longevity, robustness, and resilience of materials systems, damage management and damage prevention are crucial concepts in both biological and technical materials systems. In the case of plants, damage caused by wind loads or mechanical touch can be prevented by changes in geometry and mechanical properties of the plant organ. The insights we can draw from the differences between "stimulus-trained plants" and control plants can be models for plant-inspired solutions of damage-resistant engineering components composed of rod-shaped and planar elements.
